Trade Analysis: Memphis-Philadelphia Trade

Friday, March 16, 2012

To kick off the trade deadline festivities, the Memphis Grizzlies sent shooting guard Sam Young to the Philadelphia 76ers for future considerations. What's in store for Young's future in Philly?

1. Memphis Grizzlies

Let's go first to his former team. The G's moved their last memory of the 2009 draft (Young was selected in the 2nd round of that draft which headlined a sophomore from the University of Oklahoma named Blake Griffin). Last year, Memphis had let go of number 2 pick Hasheem Thabeet and number 27 pick DeMarre Carroll to Houston for Shane Battier, who would later sign with Miami. What the future considerations are all about was not mentioned. It may come in a form of a first round pick, cash, or both.

2. Philadelphia 76ers

Now to Philly, Sam Young, who averaged 3.5 points in 11 minutes a game with Memphis, will be added to the loaded wing rotation of the Sixers which includes All-Star Andre Iguodala, Evan Turner, Thad Young, and Jodie Meeks. Young will be a third-string SG for Philadelphia behind Turner and Meeks. Sam would be receiving $2.7 million this year because of the trade exception Philly received in giving up Marreese Speights to the Grizzlies.

Since Memphis did not receive any active player in return, I can't say that the G's are the big losers of this trade, but the future considerations they received might play an important role in their future, especially they're building a championship contender team with Rudy Gay, Mike Conley, and Marc Gasol around.
